How To Get Rid Of Ants In Your House

April 21, 2015momstownFamily LifeNo comments
Are you getting unwanted visitors in your house? Ants seem to find their way into kitchens, bathrooms, front entry ways and other household crevices. So they’re in….but how do you get them out?

You can always call a professional to come in and take care of the problem but if you don't want to spend a lot of money and want something that you can use year after year, here are a few easy remedies that should keep the ants out of your house!

Rumoured To Be Most Effective To Keep Ants Out:
Mix of 1 cup of water, 5 Tbsp of sugar and 1/2 Tbsp of Borax (can buy this at most grocery stores) and leave it on the floor for them to drink. They'll bring it to their nest and will get rid of all of them in a day.  Put this mixture where the ants are seen inside your house and also outside the house by any doors you think they may be using to get in.  This mixture is toxic so make sure it is out of reach to kids and pets.

Other Ideas:

1.  Vacuum up some baby powder (which they find toxic) and then vaccum up the group or trail of ants.

2.  Make a mixture of rubbing alcohol, dish soap and water. Get a spray bottle, making sure to wash it out very well, and place about a teaspoon of rubbing alcohol and about a teaspoon and a half of dish soap. Then fill the spray bottle with water about an inch away from the top and close it up tight. Shake the solution until bubbles start to appear and then you're ready to spray! Because of the alcohol in the solution, the ants will stay clear away from it.  Spray this over thresholds and window sills.  You can leave small amounts of this solution in bottle caps around the areas where ants were seen.

3.  Leave out some cornmeal in bottle caps or on small pieces of tin foil.   Ants eat it and after consuming water, the cornmeal swells inside their digestive organs, killing the ants.  This is a non toxic solution.

4.  Apply scents and substances that ants don't like. Vinegar, peppermint oil, cinnamon, black pepper, cayenne pepper, whole cloves, and bay leaves are all examples that have varying claims of success by sprinkling one of these options across door thresholds or entry ways.

And to be proactive, make sure you aren't leaving any food out on the counter (even crumbs) or dirty dishes in the sink and wipe out the kitchen sink too.  If you have pet food on the floor, put the food bowl in a larger dish with some water in it, creating a moat around the pet food that ants won't cross.

There are many great things about the Spring and Summer seasons but ants in the house isn't one of them!  If you have any other tried and true methods, leave us a comment and let us know. Good luck to all those trying to get rid of ants, hopefully you find something from this list that works for you.
