Do you remember life before Netflix? I kinda don't. It arrived at the perfect time in my life. My TV watching life changed dramatically in January 2009 (welcome baby #1) when shows that started past 8pm were now considered to be on past my bedtime. Since baby #2 followed in 2011, there were many series that I missed getting into and its been great to find them again on Netflix and catch up or to get in to them for the first time.
I haven't watched all of these (yet) but they are the ones that come up often in conversation and that many mamas have told me they love. Please note that these are all available on Netflix Canada.
Suits – A legal drama with the main male characters being very easy on the eyes! But its a great one to watch with your partner too, my husband loves this show.
Nashville – I got sucked into this one quickly! Love the characters (hello Deacon Claybourne!) and pretty much everything about this country drama.
Homeland – Another great drama that both male and female tv watchers can enjoy together. Claire Danes is amazing as Carrie and this show has made me jump up out of my chair more than once.
Breaking Bad – Even if you haven't watched the show yet, you've probably heard some of the lines and know a character or two. Admittedly this one took us awhile to get into (we were a few years behind all the hype) but once you get into it, its wickedly good.
The Mindy Project – This one will make you laugh! Here's the synopsis "Aiming to straighten out her complicated personal life, a top doctor seeks to overcome her obsession with romantic comedies and finding a soulmate."
Orange Is The New Black – Season 3 premieres June 12! So you've got just over 2 months to binge watch the first two seasons. The show takes place mostly in a women's prison.
Sherlock Holmes – This is another one that my husband really likes but I haven't gotten into yet. Benedict Cumberbatch is one of the main characters though and he is a fabulous actor so I have full intentions of watching this series.
The Good Wife – When I finally started watching this on Netflix I couldn't believe I had never bothered to watch it on regular tv….its SO good. My husband and I both got hooked and are now fully caught up and watch the new season on Sunday nights.
Pretty Little Liars – Total fluff but totally addicting. Terribly farfetched but for some reason it keeps so many of us coming back for more. Perfect show to watch while your on the couch cluster feeding a baby!
Downton Abbey – This show gets talked about a lot but I haven't gotten into it yet. Its definetly one of the most recommended Netflix series though.
Damages – Another legal drama but this one is set in New York. Glenn Close plays the main character, a lawyer, who has some pretty weak morals.
The Killing – If you like a good thriller (and you liked Dexter), give this show a try. Here's the synopsis "A young Seattle girl's disappearance sets in motion this moody crime series centering on Det. Sarah Linden, who's trying to start a new life in California but is unable to walk away from the mysteries posed by the complex case."
The Fall – Centred around murder investigations, actress Gillian Anderson gets rave reviews for her performance in this show. It also starts Jamie Dornan (aka Christian Grey from the 50 Shades of Grey movie).
House of Cards – Kevin Spacey is just plain evil in this show…but he makes it so enchanting to watch! A political thriller, the show focuses on Kevin Spacey's character and his mission to become President of the United States. Just wait till you see how Season 2 starts off!
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt – Created by Tina Fey, this is one of the newest shows getting hype on Netflix Canada. Here's the synopsis "When a woman is rescued from a doomsday cult and lands in New York City, she must navigate a world she didn't think even existed anymore."
Friday Night Lights – I haven't watched more than a few episodes but have heard an awful lot about Coach Taylor and Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitsch). This drama set around high school football in Texas, displays the stress that the high school players feel to win, and the hope that the team gives to a small town. Lots of heart jerking low points and high points and examines how they come together as a team on their way to victory.
Call The Midwife – Attention Downton Abbey fans, this one will be right up your alley! Set in the 1950s, the show is based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth. It follows new midwife Jenny Lee and other midwives and nuns working in a nursing convent in an impoverished section of London's East End. There are currently three seasons to enjoy on Netflix Canada.
Bloodline – A Netflix original series that is dark and haunting. Starring Sissy Spacek and Kyle Chandler (from Friday Night Lights mentioned above), The Rayburns are hard-working pillars of their community but have lots of demons lurking in their past. When the black sheep son comes home for the 45th anniversary of his parents' hotel, he threatens to expose the Rayburns' shameful past.
And don't forget to revisit some older shows that you may have missed like Prison Break or Grey's Anatomy (they have the first 10 seasons on Netflix Canada!), Friends or How I Met Your Mother.
