Chances are you know about the benefits of using a cool mist humidifier if you are looking for information on how to clean a humidifier. In my house, the humidifier comes out when that pesky lingering cough seems to latch on to my kids and we're desperate to find something to help them sleep at night. Running a cool mist humidifer adds moisture to the air and helps relieve swelling in the passegeways that flow to the nose and mouth which helps alleviate that cough.
But since that humidifier may only come out every now and then or only in the winter months, its important to make sure you clean it before you run it. Without regular cleaning, mould and bacteria can sprout.
Here are some tips for keeping your humidifier in tip top shape:
Just so you know, filters can get discoloured and that doesn't necessarily mean its mouldy. Often times tap water can discolour the filter (orange-ish tint) and running a cycle of white vinegar and water through the unit will help.
So how often should you clean your humidifier? Its recommended that you clean it at the end of the season before you put it away and to dust it off before you use it for the first time out of storage (but if you didn't clean it before you put it away, you'll have to do a full clean before you start it up for the first time). Once you are using it regularly, it should be cleaned every couple of months or more often if you are using heavily (like all day, every day during a period of illness).
